Akin Walker's financial aid package covers his entire educational costs for the year.

On the Fast Track

With a financial aid package that combines federal, state and institutional aid, Akin Walker '10 can easily afford a private college education. Among his scholarships are two from the Independent College Fund of Maryland: a $5,000 Leadership Scholarship and a $1,000 Gudelsky Family Foundation Scholarship awarded to minority students from Montgomery & Prince George's County.

Akin, who aspires to a career as a certified public accountant, is on the academic fast track. The 19-year-old business management major from Gaithersburg expects to graduate a year early, allowing his mother to return to her native Liberia. His family heritage and an ear for languages has sparked his interest in all things multicultural—including Hispanic and Japanese studies. "I like languages a lot," says Akin, who plans to travel to Japan over the winter break with his Japanese classmates. I'm also considering spending a year or two after college in Japan, teaching English as a Second Language."

Akin is equally adept at musical language. When he studied Spanish in high school, he was introduced to the music of the Buena Vista Social Club. "I fell in love with the music," he says. "I memorized all of the songs. So when I heard about the Afro-Cuban Ensemble at Washington College, I started singing with them. We've added a lot of songs to our repertoire, and we recently performed at a street festival in Easton."

For Akin, Washington College has surpassed his expectations. "I went to a small private school in Hagerstown, where the college counselor also emphasized smaller schools. I really wanted to come to Washington College—it's a peaceful environment, and I appreciate the global learning component within the business management major. I just might go to Morocco."
