NHS Membership Pays Off

Success in high school is key to getting into college and, for some students like Whitney Smith '11, it can also help pay for college. Because she is a member of the National Honor Society, Whitney automatically receives a $10,000 merit-based scholarship each year.

"That's a lot for each year," she said. "It takes a big chunk off of the tuition."

In addition to her scholarship, Whitney also has a work-study position answering phones and filing papers in the College's Office of Student Aid.

Her on-campus job and her NHS scholarship allow Whitney to focus on her academics.

"I like that the class sizes are very small so you get to work closely with your professors," said Whitney, who is taking courses in economics, drama and Spanish, in addition to her first-year seminar.

"I definitely am looking forward to taking new classes and meeting more professors. All of the classes I've had so far are genuinely interesting," she said.

Though she's only a freshman, Whitney has big plans for the years ahead at Washington College. She's considering a major in business and she hopes to become fluent in Spanish, study abroad in Madrid and spend a semester interning at the White House.

"I want to travel everywhere, see everything I can see, make sure I have a good job and then settle down," she said.

In the meantime, Whitney is happy settling in at Washington College.

"The girls on my hall do breakfast, lunch and dinner together, we go out together, and I've had them back to my house already," she said. "I've connected really well with them."
