Deadline: March 31, 2010

APPLICATIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE LATE FALL 2009

Up to $5,000 will be awarded to a college senior or a graduate student pursuing a career in English or Spanish-language TV broadcast journalism. This scholarship is made possible thanks to a substantial donation by Geraldo Rivera, host of “Geraldo At Large” on FOX News, as a way to support young Latino journalists aspiring to enter the field.

Each of the following criteria is weighed equally when NAHJ considers which students to select as scholarship recipients:

  1. COMMITMENT TO THE FIELD OF JOURNALISM — Students must demonstrate an interest and desire to pursue a career in the field of journalism. This applies to students who are planning careers in English or Spanish-language media. Students do not have to be journalism majors to be eligible for NAHJ scholarships.
  2. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT — There is no minimum grade point average to qualify for NAHJ scholarships. However, earning good grades is always important. Academic performance will play a role in deciding which students are awarded scholarships.
  3. FINANCIAL NEED — The economic status of a student's household will be taken into consideration in making scholarship selections.
  4. AWARENESS OF THE COMMUNITY — The Latino community is the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. Student journalists need to be aware of issues that face the Latino community and Latinos in the newsroom while striving to portray all people in a fair and accurate manner in coverage of stories.

The Roothbert Fund Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2010

The Roothbert Fund was created in 1958 by Albert and Toni Roothbert to help men and women in need of financial aid to further their education. The principal focus of The Fund is its Scholarships Program, through which it makes grants for undergraduate or graduate study at accredited colleges or universities. Scholarships may only be applied to study at an accredited institution based in the United States. The Fund seeks candidates who are "motivated by spiritual values," and works to foster fellowship among them.

The Fund is a small, nearly all-volunteer scholarship fund based in New York City, which awards yearly grants and works to foster fellowship among grant recipients. Once a year, the Fund accepts applications for grants, which include essays, transcripts and recommendations. From these written applications, the Fund identifies a group of finalists to be invited for a brief personal interview. On the basis of this interview, the Fund typically selects about 20 new scholarship recipients each year.

Eligibility:
Roothbert Fund scholarships are open to all in the United States regardless of sex, age, color, nationality or religious background. While the Fund does not emphasize any particular form of religious practice or worship, it seeks to provide support to persons motivated by spiritual values. The Fund has awarded grants to persons entering a wide range of careers. However, preference will be given to those who can satisfy high scholastic requirements and are considering careers in education. For more information, applicants should read with care the Founders Prologue in the History and Mission of the Fund.

As a rule, The Roothbert Fund does not make Scholarship Grants EXCEPT to applicants whose current or permanent address is located in one of the following States of the United States and applicants planning to move to one of such States prior to March 1 of the year in which the application is made: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, or North Carolina. It is probably counter-productive to submit an application if you live outside this area. Grants are small (averaging $2,000-$3,000) and are meant to be supplementary. Aid is given for the ensuing school year.

For more information on this scholarship and to download a copy of the application, please go to: The Roothbert Fund, Inc. Scholarship.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship

Deadline: Varies with each District

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country. Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today’s Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders.

Types of scholarships
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$25,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. They are the most common type of Ambassadorial Scholarships.
Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $12,500 is provided each year.
Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships help finance either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $12,000 for three months and $17,000 for six months. Funds are intended to offset costs associated with round-trip transportation, language training, and homestay living arrangements. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.

Some Rotary districts may offer only one type of scholarship, or none at all. Applicants must check with their local club about availability. Grants are provided in U.S. dollars or their international equivalent.

Interested applicants must apply for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club. Because timelines vary, only your local club can provide specific information about application deadlines. For 2010-11 awards, club deadlines may be as early as 1 March 2009 or as late as 15 August 2009. Remember that availability varies by Rotary district. If your local district is not offering scholarships at this time, try inquiring next year. Use the Club Locator to find contact information for Rotary clubs found on Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship . If your hometown does not have a Rotary club, try entering the names of nearby cities. You can also consult a local telephone directory.
